Staff Photo: Week 1 so far

Alrighty then....so far staff photo--isn't too bad. It's a challenge for me in the sense that it requires lots of patience, a virtue of which I am in short supply of. However, I am trying to challenge myself with new techniques and ideas and ways to make otherwise "boring" shots interesting and appealing. So far, so good!

Three things I'd wish I'd known at the start of reporting..

So with reporting coming to an end, it's time to look back and reflect on what I wish I had known when it all started. Below are the three big things:

  1. For sports, check mutigers.com DAILY!! A lot of stories, tips and news releases pop up there every day...this also helps you contact sources for other stories, for once you contact a media representative with the MU athletic department they tend to always include you on future emails (this is awesome for sports!)
  2. Don't worry so much about intruding on someone's space or making them (the source/subject) feel uncomfortable, it doesn't help you at all when reporting or writing a story
  3. Question everything, even your editors at times. Checking everything anyone says is important.

I had no idea you could kill baby animals...legally

Apparently zoos need controlled breeding....well what about breeding and rearing for the WILD, you know GIVING BACK to the environment that the world has essentially destroyed. Read this article on the controversial use of euthanasia and now contraceptives to control wildlife and exotic animal breeding in zoos.

Busy bee

Today was a good lesson in how fast-paced a newsroom environment can be. The sports' desk seemed relatively quiet in the early part of this week, and reporters sat in the mornings feeling useless.

That didn't really happen for me. I began catching an itch to work on something immediately, and I found some releases to cover. So I did those. They didn't quench my thirst though.

Luckily, as the week wore on, releases turned into stories and updates. And, by Friday night, I had a total of 7 media (stories, briefs, and a picture) up. Sunday, I have another event awaiting to be covered. I was glad to be feeling used again.

But, the real story was today. I was following Christian Cantwell in London, and the morning update got written, edited, and posted with ease. This afternoon was different.

Nick and I went to the afternoon MU basketball press-conference regarding the team's upcoming tour to Europe for 10 days. Well, of course after that was done, it was due for Cantwell's final results. So, while in the early moments of writing on the press-conference my editor flew me away and said Cantwell? So I flew, wrote an update, and flew back and wrote more of the story.

But, then I was needed to help identify people in pictures and write captions. By the time I returned to Nick, he had finished our last few thoughts and Greg had the story.
Just have to say love working with Nick as a team, he was great getting the story with and we worked fast and efficiently together to get the story done and published with complete coverage.

Needless to say, I'm tired.

Have we passed racism yet?

Has the world moved on past racism and scapegoating yet? Is Hitler, though dead, really gone? His Nazi ideas still seem to be lasting in socialst and neo-Nazi groups in Germany. Even an Olympic athlete from Germany admitted to being tied to a neo-Nazi group.....see here

Views on being a journalist today

The most annoying thing about being a journalist is when you have difficulty getting anything or even hearing from a source. Thus, when you finally get a source you are so happy-even if it wasn't the top choice.
Lesson of the day: sometimes you have to take what you can get that works, and if you're lucky and you have follow-ups for a story already scheduled you can keep trying to get ahold of the source and maybe, just maybe, get a quote or two from them for the follow-up.

Never too old to compete in the Olympics

All I can say for Japan's oldest Olympic competitor is that I hope by his age I'd have this chance too. Read this article by the Associated Press about 71 year old, Hiroshi Hoketsu, competing in the dressage events. He will compete today in London.

Most Hilarious Football player award goes to....

And, the winner is....ELVIS FISHER~

In a recent self-posted joke press-conference, SEE HERE, Missouri offensive linemen Elvis Fisher proclaimed demands that had to be met if he was to return to play for the University of Missouri again.

The press conference? him talking to his friend in a car via a video camera

The demands: Hilariously RIDICULOUS!

  1. New soap in the locker room
  2. A personal Segway
  3. Twitter name on Jersey
  4. Personal assistants
  5. New shirts
The soap, Well I hope Mizzou does this actually Fisher, because boys are smelly after practice and games.

As for the Segway...are you joking? Segways are for old men and cops....you should've asked for a brand new Ducati (just saying :) )

Twitter name? Hell yes! Go Fisher for entertaining the influx of social media! Journalists will applaud you everywhere.

Personal Assistants? Isn't that why you have a cheerleading team....

New shirts, we agree. Bookstore creativity has been lacking as have game-day shirts. Maybe you should create an anonymous email with a football shirt design contest and then you get to wear all the submissions (all in T-shirt form of course)

Fisher, have to say I enjoyed this. Wish more athletes could show the funny sides of themselves instead of being so serious all the time. You are all still in college so :)

Good luck this fall!!

Have guys really grown past gaming in college?

I come home every so often to Dallas, the most active and exciting city in Texas other than the famed college towns of College Station and Austin. And when I come home, I expect to find my parents working, my dogs tearing up the backyard and my brother out with his friends.

This time, coming home in May was no different, except for my brother.

I found him in what I called his "pre-college" state; sitting at his laptop with a headset like that of a telemarketer and talking to no one. Well not no one, but to his fellow gamers all wasting time on World of Warcraft. There he was, still in pajamas, lounging on the couch, a five-o-clock shadow growing at 10 a.m. and smelling as if he hadn't showered in a day.

I really had thought college had been the turning point. He had lots of friends, was interested in girls, and he was never home. He was always at the movies, going bowling or golfing, partying and watching sports at his friends houses. Apparently, I was wrong.

The whole week I was home, I never saw him leave that laptop. The headphones never came off except for bathroom, TV and food breaks. Sometimes, he would go workout and go off with friends, but not enough. By the third day I was home the imprint of his ass could be seen indented into the leather love seat; the leather had actually started to look worn.

I began to think of other guys I knew. They were huge gamers too.

It seems for some guys in college, there is just no escaping the world of computer fantasy games. I've literally learned that unless it's time for class, to go out, or drink and maybe sometimes TV, the world of games is just too fascinating.

An article by the Huffington Post said 97 percent of children play video games. Now, 63 percent of the entire American population, age 15-65, is playing games! Gaming is on the move, the article said.

London trials

So it's the last two weeks as a sports reporter at the Missourian, and well it's trying. It's trying in the sense that there is essentially NOTHING going on locally that's news. Yes, yes, there is always something as my editor Grant says, but truthfully it feels efforts looking for things are fruitless.

I'm going to MU Fan Day on Sunday the 5th to cover that. There we go :)
Also, I am keeping up with former MU shot-putter Christian Cantwell about his performance in the shot--put in London at the Olympics on August 3rd. WE are trying to get a story beforehand, an attempt that resulted in some back channel searching and luckily finding--finally--a London USTF contact who was so sweet and emailed me back this morning that she would get in touch with Christian and try to get something worked out for me....will let you know soon.

So wisdom of the day? Don't give up. Look through those back channels and wayside roads....they will sometimes produce "fruit".

Worth the wait?

Is a story worth the wait? An image?

Yes, usually it is. Today I learned that you may have to wait a long-while for the even to happen due to weather or something else.

Was it worth it? OH yeS!

Loyal Vaulting

Wish you had a cooler life? The Loyal family has an incredible one!!

Go see this family of four--Tim, Elizabeth and their two young daughters Aurora and Suri, perform acrobatic and vaulting tricks on horses in the Loyal Vaulting Equestrian Show.

It's at the Boone County Fairgrounds at 5:30/6:30 pm, 7:30 & 8:30 pm.

An article with great pictures by the Missourian will be up soon! Be sure to also check out their facebook page for pictures by yours truly and to see what they are up to next!! :)

Is Twitter really that powerful?

So we spoke of the power and danger of social media last week. Take a look at this recent posting about Greek Olympian, well FORMER Olympian now, triple jumper. She tweeted without thinking and has now been taken off the Olympic team for Greece... Well I guess that's just more evidence of the  growing power of social media.

Check out the piece here!

Interviewing

Interviewing? Hmm....it is to reporting what polarized sunglasses are to fishers...ESSENTIAL

The most important thing about interviewing isn't the simple questions, what, how, why or when, but to shut up! Let your subjects talk! More often than not, the subject talks and keeps talking and moves from subject to subject or expands on one subject beyond what you expected just because you let them keep going. Sometimes shutting up can reveal something that they didn't necessarily mean to say "the SO what" factor changes etc....

Thus, the most important thing about interviewing, is really to just be quiet and let your source talk. When they're done, then you can throw another question at them.

bowfishing piece!!

http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2012/07/16/fish-robin-hood-bowfishing-missouri/

Lessons Learned by July 16th

Ok, so when reporting there are important rules to remember--these are lessons I've learned so far:

  1. ALWAYS have a notebook and pens/pencils with you (even if you are just galavanting off to the lake with your girlfriends)
  2. ALWAYS have a camera, even if its a tiny digital one, ON HAND--(even if you just plan to take pictures of you and your girls trying to catch fish with your hands in the lake and drinking terribly sweet spiked pink lemonade)
  3. FOCUS your ideas while reporting, it helps when writing a story. Why do this? So you don't get yelled at by your editor

Try new things!

OH! One last thing....
go BOWFISH!! It's amazing...even girly girls and gamer boys will love it!!!

Loyal Vaulting

Everyone needs to go to the Boone County Fair in two weeks and check out Loyal Vaulting!! This amazing family performs together with their equestrian partners to perform acrobatic and incredible routines that wow the audience. Horses are incredible creatures, and I feel so fortunate to be able to go speak with them when they come to town and experience their life first-hand.

July 11th flashback

Ok, so  I got to experience something really cool July 11th. I drove a little over 3 hours to DeSoto, Mo. to meet with Dennis Samnee, President of the Missouri Falconers Association. His home is amazing! I got to see and interact with 5 different birds of prey, a talkative Macaw, dogs, chickens and geese. Look for the story about Samnee and falconry coming soon!

Lesson: never be unwilling to go to great distances for a source---you never know what story you will uncover

July 9th

Cool things about reporting? Getting to honor amazing people via the written word
Although, it does take over your life....

But, anyways!! HOpefully you will be able to watch this week for two-three articles I will be doing.  I'm also interview Wednesday on Falconry (really excited :))) and then a horse-show on Saturday :)

July 7th

Day 2 of fishing--no fish really BUT tons of fun with Guy Robert! Look for a multimedia article with Emma Kessinger and Nate Atkins on Bowfishing coming soon!

Word to the wise! GO TRY IT! :))

In other terms---sometimes it can be difficult working on an article for a long period of time--you just want to be done. Don't rush it though, because that extra bit of effort can make the article incredible--don't succumb to giving up even if your editor keeps throwing changes and new questions for you to ask and the sources are hard to contact...keep going! Perseverance is key!

jumbling stories= good! Jumbling BIG stories= not so easy !

Best day of reporting so far! July 6th

Attention!! Why do reporting?
Because 1) you get to meet famous Olympic historians
and 2) you get to go bowfishing and get all bloody, gutsy and dirty and catch fish Robin Hood style

Caught 3 fish today and landed a total of 4 (the first one slipped off the arrow before we could get it in the boat). Thank you Jeff and Nathan!
Going again tomorrow....and gearing up my own bow for it this summer

Lesson of reporting: always be prepared to try new things and never place anything or anyone in a pre-concieved story plot or view---you will always be surprised.

July 4th flash back 2012

How did you spend July 4th?

watching fireworks? eating grilled food? by the pool? drunk at bengals? (yes you were many )

What does reporting do to your life on the 4th? It take its over....last night was spent driving all around Columbia taking pictures of places and meeting random people for an Orientation Assignment....wasn't too happy about spending the 4th like that or burning oh a total of $40 in gas for this assignment....

note to future journalism students--if you hate driving, traveling and otherwise giving up your life---don't be a reporter

Something from reporting this week

Alright second week in, have huge stories in the works and not published yet--why? because of the numerous sources, photography needs and the awful difficulty of setting up meetings in order to finalize that last source you need to finish the story

lesson learned: sometimes you have to be patient and not freak out about not having a story published immediately in the week

July 5th

Week 2 of reporting:

Fault lines, framing and sourcing---overall lesson: BE CAREFUL!

today: working on Title IX, fishing story and olympic story

Essay:
Well this assignment basically took me on a tour of Columbia. I had already been to many if not all of these places except for Discovery Ridge and the two high schools. I learned where these places were and how to find them. And , I also learned it is important to be able to find these places quickly if a story should ever arise at them. I also learned that driving all around Columbia burns my gas tank, and that in the future when working for a paper or any job to be sure to include gas mileage compensation in my contract. Otherwise, the last thing important to this assignment was getting more experience talking to new people—event the ones that don’t want to be interviewed.

So I got pitched this awesome story, but so far it's difficult....AKA I am having my first experience with a difficult to obtain source, but of course it's the one I really want to talk to. Hopefully luck will hold out and I will get my contact!

Second, I have started  an idea for a story regarding Title IX, look for it an a month or so.

FINALLY,
I am going bowfishing next week for Nate's and I's multimedia project. Hello awesome new experience and great story!!

SECOND ARTICLE

Here is my second article, a piece on MU swimmer Sam Tierney. And, thanks to his awesome dad there are pictures as well!! :)Sam Tierney at Olympic Trials Article

June 27th--Quiet or not?

Alrighty!! Second official day in the newsroom! Somehow, and I really have no clue how, I have started to no longer care that my hours spent by the pool have been replaced by hours spent writing and typing in a cold, shadowy newsroom.....

First story was a success this morning appearing both online and in the print edition of The Columbia Missourian sports section. It ran as the only piece in sports by a Missourian writer (all others were Associated Press). At the budget meeting this morning the article got lots of praise, and I was very heartened to have Elizabeth Brixey come up to me this afternoon and make sure I knew that it was my article getting praise this morning. Needless to say Grant was happy as well when Brixey informed of the response the article generated this morning.

Have two more stories coming out tonight or tomorrow about two other MU swimmers, and hopefully by Friday a story about an MU thrower who is also trying to qualify for the Olympics.

Best moment of the day: Greg telling me Grant had some stories to throw my way & Grant later throwing stories my way!! Feeling honored and excited!

First Article--June 26th

FIRST ARTICLE

Article above about MU sophomore and swimmer Connor Nolan and his challenges over the past year and overcoming them to get to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.

June 26th--oh the wonders of technology

Alright, so today was the second day of reporting (official first day of class). I almost missed class due to zoning out on a story in the newsroom--at least my heart was in the right place right? Anyways, a couple tips I picked up today and have learned already:

  • don't be afraid to use one source to get other ideas; expand your story to get new stories
  • the best stories aren't usually the ones you originally plan on doing--get your subject to just talk to you because they usually reveal something more interesting than what you had originally planned
  • it is Subject said NOT said Subject--this is important
  • not everything needs to go in a story, work on conciseness
Otherwise so far I love this class and my beat. Grant H. has been amazing already in helping me get organized in thought and ideas for structure and helping teach me editing. I have a story already getting published tomorrow/tonight and two more on the way that will appear later this week.  Hope you guys like the Olympics!!!!

June 25th--First Day of Reporting

Alright, so today has been long. Up early in the morning for work, I honestly was dreading an all day orientation with class in the middle. But, orientation and the subsequent sports meeting turned out to be just what my day needed. Yes, it is essentially past midnight, but I am wide awake. Why you ask? Because at the meeting this afternoon it became evidently clear that there would be very little hand holding and it was up to us to find stories to do. Well guess what? I found my first story, and the original idea I had, while decent, transformed into a personal, deep sports piece about a talented young athlete. The article should be up tomorrow, and I must say as I coined the idea, did the research, conducted the interview and wrote the story all on the first day I would say I am feeling pretty peachy-keen about reporting so far. Now...to find my next story!

Painting With Light

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teens and second leading cause of death in college age students. In a recent CDC Youth Risk Survey it was found that 25% of high-school students have ideas about suicide, and that in the last year 1 out of every 12 high-school students attempted suicide. It is a huge issue among teens today, and parents should be more aware as teens are crying out for help.

Spring Break Miracle Photos!!!

ALright...this has NOTHING to do with our class, but I just wanted to share the most amazing experience I've ever had. Saturday and Sunday I spent my evenings sleeping on an air mattress under a pile of horseblankets alone and waking up every two hours to check on Chloe our pregnant broodmare and to clean her stall. Night one--Saturday--resulted in no baby and two hours of sleep. Sunday, again two hours of sleep, but at the magic hour of 12am Chloe broke water and went into labor. At 12:20am a beautiful chesnut colt was born with two white hind socks and a white star and connecting stripe. It was incredible to watch and be part of this entire experience from last may (insemination) to now (labor, birth and imprinting the foal) and now caring for mommy and baby. Anyways, below are pictures from last night's birthing events.
